FROM OUR AMERICAN LEGION RIDERS June 2010
Following our April meeting we rode to the Veterans Memorial in Balboa Park to present the check to the Warrior Foundation. We were greeted with refreshments by Sandy and other representatives of the foundation. They were extremely appreciative and gracious with regard to our $3000 donation. We would all like to see this evolve into the premier fund raising event for the Warrior Foundation in California. Following the presentation we rode to Post 201 for lunch. Karl is back from vacation and it was good to see him. Elections were held at the meeting, officers are as follows: Director - Carl Johnson Asst. Director - Mark Dedes Secretary / Treasurer - Laura Anderson Sergeant at arms - Jack Siegel Congratulations to all!! Please take a moment to thank them all for their hard work and dedication to Chapter 853 American Legion Riders. Ride safe, Harry

FROM OUR AMERICAN LEGION RIDERS May 2010
I
am pleased to report that the "2nd Annual Desert Run" was a huge
success. We netted over $2200 for the WARRIOR FOUNDATION. Thanks to everyone
who worked hard to make it the success it was. Special thanks to Dave, Doc, Danna and Meredith for the great meals!! Thanks also to the Sand
Daddies, for the good music and their generous donation of all their tips to
the Warrior Foundation. Lets not forget everyone that donated raffle
prizes and silent auction items either. We have sent thank you letters out to
all the donors, if you donated and did not get your letter for tax purposes,
let Lorinda know.
We will be riding to the Veterans Museum and Memorial Center to present the check following our May 2nd meeting. We will discuss the
amount we will donate at our meeting as well, we are certainly not limited to
the $2200. We are scheduled to make the presentation at 1230 hours. We
still have some event t-shirts available in limited sizes for $12 each, let us know
if you want any and we will bring them to the meeting. I hope to see as many
riders as possible show up for this event.
We will hold elections at the May 2nd
meeting, with installation to follow at the completion of the meeting. Please
be thinking/talking about whom you would like your leadership to be for the
next term.
Our "Build your own omelet
breakfast" is scheduled for May 9th, "Mothers Day", 2010. Price is still the picayune sum of $6.00. We will have complimentary
champagne or mimosas for all moms. Please come out and support us.
Meeting: Sunday, May 2nd 2010 @ 0900.
Thanks, hope to see you then, ride safe.

[9] FROM OUR AL R RIDERS From March 2010 Desert Breeze
Members
Laura Anderson and Denny Fotion have a healthy baby boy. We can't wait to see
them.
Dee
Del Bono was in the hospital, but is out now and doing well. We wish her
continued and complete recovery.
At
last count our membership is up to 49 members.
We
helpedALA
with their Baked Potato dinner and will be helping with breakfast this Sunday
for the Clampers.
We
postponed our February ride to Karl Delooze's post inLemon
Grove due to rain. Some drove down and had a great time. We are
planning on trying this ride again next month following our Sunday, March 7th
meeting at 0900 hours.
We
supported the ALR Palm Springs Post with their Chili Cook-off last Saturday,
(ask Danna about her sunflower seeds). We approached vendors there to
see if they would be available for our event
in April.
Everything
is going forward in our preparations for the "Desert Run".
Registrations are starting to trickle in. We have our ride pins and they're
great thanks to
Mark! T-Shirts are on their way. Advertising

[8] FROM OUR ALR
At our December [2009] meeting we accepted new members Denny Fotion and Dale Roberson. Welcome to both of you! Our membership is now up to forty five. Our ride around the Salton Sea was a bit brisk and blustery, but a good time was had by all. Our "Cook Your Own Omelet" breakfast was well attended, we have developed quite a following. We have received generous donations from members Mike Marmolejo and Jon Gilbert. Those funds will be used to support our programs. We still have some ALR patches, etc. available for purchase. See Mark Dedes for details. We will have them available at the Jan. meeting as well. Our next meeting is Sunday, Jan. 3rd at 0900 hours with a ride to follow. We discussed going to Pioneer Town via Joshua Tree National Monument, weather permitting. We should have the art work for our "2nd Annual Desert Run" t-shirts soon, and will then distribute flyers and start to promote the event. Hope to see many of you at the Jan. meeting and ride. Ride safe, Harry

[7] FROM OUR AMERICAN LEGION RIDERS
Fourteen
of our riders participated in the Borrego Days parade, we shared the first
place trophy for "Motorized Entries" with the Legion.
Forty of our members have already renewed for 2010, and we welcome new members
John Sherrill, and Michael & Gloria Hardcastle-Taylor.
The "2nd Annual Desert Run" committee is busy working on next years
run. We should have fliers ready to distribute soon. We had a good turnout for
our cook your own omelet breakfast. Thank you to everybody who helped. Speaking
of food and cooking, we have completed the repairs to the Wolf range/oven, and
it is back in service! At our last meeting we approved donating $50 a month to
the Post to use at their discretion.
Per
member Mark Mobley, retirees and veterans are now allowed to salute the flag: The national defense authorization
act of 2008 contained an amendment to allow un-uniformed
service members, military retirees, and veterans to render a hand salute during
the hoisting, lowering, or passing of theU. S. flag. A later amendment
authorized hand salutes during the national anthem by veterans and out of
uniform military personnel. This act was signed by President Bush on Oct. 14,
2008. Our next meeting is Dec. 6th, 2009 at 0900 hours at the post. A ride
around theSalton Sea is planned. See you
there, ride safe. Harry

[6] FROM OUR LEGION
RIDERS DIRECTOR
Our
annual Tombstone trip was another success! We had seven bikes and two chase
vehicles. Usually a chase vehicle is a vehicle that follows behind a
group of motorcycles on a long trip to haul any bikes that break down along the
way, in our case one of them was used to haul "Motor Clothes" for the
women. It was good that we had two, because one bike broke down on the way
back. Thanks to Dave & Dana and Shorty & Patrick for supporting us.
We
held our monthly meeting at the American Legion there, and the Tombstone ALR
joined us for a ride to Bisbee and Chiricahua National Monument. The
Tombstone ALR were extremely hospitable and a great bunch of people. A
great time was had by all!! We have invited them to come visit us.
We will be riding in the Borrego Days
parade Saturday, Oct. 24th. The parade begins at 1000 hours. Our assembly time
is 0845 hours.
Our next meeting is Sunday, the 1st of November at 0900 hours at Post 853. There will be a ride to follow.
Our November Omelet breakfast has
been rescheduled to November 15th, 0900 to 1200 hours. Cost is $6.00 as usual. Please
come out and support us.
We have increased the yearly dues to
$15.00, and Lorinda has sent out the new membership forms. The forms include
the waivers that we have to update yearly and keep on file. Please include
any updated contact information.
Ride safe, Harry

[5 At our September meeting we approved participating in the Borrego Days desert festival and parade. The parade is Saturday, October 24th at 1000 hours, with check-in prior to 0930 hours. If you would like to participate, let Harry or Mark know. We will have at least one "parade riding" practice session prior to the parade. The parade committee will need to verify your driver's license and insurance information.
We also elected Mark Dedes as our Road Captain - congratulations Mark! We approved expending up to $500 to repair the Wolf range, as it is desperately needed for meals. Speaking of ranges and food, Dee did an excellent job with the Italian dinner on Aug. 28th.The meal was delicious, and we served approximately 36 meals. We had only 17 for breakfast on Sept.13th, actually not bad considering the time of year. Since many of us will be in Tombstone the first Sunday in October, we will hold our meeting at the Legion
post there. If anybody didn't get the word, we will be leaving Borrego Springs Friday, Oct 2nd at 0700 hours and returning Monday, October 5th. There are numerous motels in Tombstone. For more information go to Google, and enter "tombstone arizona lodging". Lorinda is putting together a photo album/scrap book to be displayed at the post. Thank you Lorinda! If you have something to add, see Lorinda. We received acknowledgment from the armed services YMCA for our donation from the proceeds from our first
annual desert run, the letter is posted on our bulletin board. We will be doing our omelet breakfast on Sunday, October, 11th, 0900 - 1200, price - $6.00. Please come out and support us and the post. We have increased dues to $15.00, and will be sending out renewal notices soon, or just send check payable to ALR Chapter 853 to the Post. Hope to see many of you in Tombstone, ride safe, Harry

[4 ] At our meeting July 12th we accepted and welcomed two new members, John and Kathy Erickson, approved spending up to $200.00 to purchase a pop-up for the post, approved a $100.00 donation for the Legacy Run sponsored by Verde Valley Post #25 ALR. The Legacy Run is on August 2nd, if you are interested in attending contact Mark Dedes. The first meeting of the 2010 Desert Run committee will be August
22nd at 0900 at the post. The July ride was to Barrett Junction, Carl Johnson was the road captain. We will be dark in August, no meeting and no cook your own omelet breakfast. We have been asked to do a dinner on the fourth Friday in August, let me know if you have ideas. Thanks to all who participated in the July 5th breakfast, we were successful even though attendance was down due to the time of the year. A special thanks to Dave & Danna for putting on the "Cook your own steak dinner". It was
a success and we were able to liquidate some of our leftovers from the Desert Run. Our next meeting is September 6th at 0900 hours at the post, it was suggested that we make the September run to the USS Midway museum, however, that is Labor Day weekend - we may want to rethink that. Ride safe, see you in September, Harry

[2] Our ride to Stone brewery was great! We left here with 14 bikes - it was an impressive sight. We received a complimentary 40 minute personal tour of the brewery followed by beer sampling and then lunch. If you have not been to the brewery, it is a worthwhile trip! We stopped by the Escondido
post (149) on the way home. Our Mothers Day breakfast was a huge success. Breakfast and champagne was complimentary for all the Moms. We served 65 meals, and still netted about $200. Thanks to all who supported us and those who came forward to help. On Sunday, May 17th we delivered checks from the Legion, SAL's, Auxiallary and Riders to the Children's burn institue fund raiser at Santa Ysabel Casino. The representative from the burn institute
was very appreciative, and stated ours was the first ever donation of that kind at a fund raiser. We will be doing gourmet burgers, beans & potato salad with Dave & Dana June 6th. Cost is $8.00, proceeds to ALR & building fund. Please come out and support us. Our June meeting will be Sunday the 7th at 0900 hours. We will be electing and installing officers. The ride to follow will be to Idyllwild, with road captains Linda & Mel. We will be doing our usual cook your own omelet breakfast on June
14th. Cost is $6.00. We will discuss the work crew at the June 7th meeting. See you the 7th, RIDE SAFE, Harry

[1] I'm happy to report that the First Annual Desert Run was a success. Jim Battaglia is still crunching the numbers, but it appears that we will have a substantial contribution to the Veterans Assistance and Rehabilitation fund! Thanks to everybody who worked so hard to make it a success. Thanks also to all the other Legion family members (Legionaries, SALs and Auxiliary) for their assistance
and support. Special thanks to Chef Tom who served up rib eye steaks and chicken Friday night, and also helped prepare the beans for our Saturday dinner. Then there's Dave and Danna who went above and beyond the call of duty, they served gourmet burgers Friday night, breakfast Saturday morning and provided lunch for riders that came to visit and showed their support on Saturday. We will be planning a couple dinners in the near future to use up the left-overs from the event. I understand that the club had a good
weekend as well. Participants I spoke with that weekend were very impressed with the event and are looking forward to the Second Annual Desert Run. One suggestion for next year was that we should have run pins. All in all, it went very well and we learned a few things that will make next years event even better. We gave away approximately thirty prizes Saturday evening during the bands intermissions. A big thank you to all of the prize donors, and congratulations to the winners. Thanks also to Dan Christensen
for emceeing. Thank you letters are being sent to all donors for tax purposes. Our next meeting is the first Sunday of May, 05-03-09, at 0900 hours with ride to follow. The ride will be to Stone Brewery, and is organized by Dee DelBono. ALR will be doing "Cook Ur-Own Omelet" on Mothers Day, 05-10-09, from 0900 to 1200 hours. Cost is $6.00.
RIDE SAFE and thanks for your support!! Harry
